Zapoteca Margarita Recipe

Bright, crisp, and perfectly balanced, this classic Zapoteca Margarita skips the bottled mixes in favor of fresh citrus and sweet agave. Silver tequila provides a clean foundation that lets the fresh-squeezed lime juice shine through. You'll love how the savory salted rim cuts right through the sweet and sour notes. It's a refreshing cocktail that easily elevates your next taco night or weekend afternoon.

Ingredients

  • 6 oz (170 ml) ice cubes
  • 1½ oz (45 ml) silver tequila (I recommend Herradura Silver)
  • ½ oz (15 ml) orange liqueur
  • ½ oz (15 ml) agave nectar
  • 1½ oz (45 ml) fresh squeezed lime juice
  • Salt for rim of glass

Instructions

  1. 1Add the ice cubes to a cocktail shaker, then pour in the silver tequila, orange liqueur, agave nectar, and fresh-squeezed lime juice.
  2. 2Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously 12 to 15 times. This breaks up the ice, chills the liquid, and adds just enough dilution to balance the strong spirits.
  3. 3Spread the salt on a small plate and gently press the rim of a chilled martini glass into it to evenly coat the edge. Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass.

Notes

  • Tip: To help the salt stick better, lightly moisten the rim of your glass with a drop of agave or a leftover squeezed lime shell before dipping.
  • Glassware: If you don't have a martini glass, a classic margarita glass or a short rocks glass works just fine.
  • Make ahead: You can mix the tequila, liqueur, agave, and lime juice in a pitcher ahead of time. Just wait to shake with ice until you're ready to drink.
