Cinnamon French Toast Sticks

Cinnamon French Toast Sticks

These cinnamon French toast sticks are paired with a homemade spiced apple cider syrup for a comforting breakfast treat. The from-scratch syrup is thickened and spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, adding a warm, sweet, and slightly tart flavor to the dish. Crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, the bread sticks soak up the rich egg batter perfectly. Serve this fun, dippable meal for a cozy weekend brunch or a special family breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ¼ cup butter, cut into 8 pieces
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 10 slices firm-textured sandwich bread, cut into thirds

Instructions

  1. 1Combine the sugar, three tablespoons of flour, one-quarter teaspoon of cinnamon, and the nutmeg in a medium saucepan. Whisk in the apple cider and lemon juice until smooth.
  2. 2Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the liquid thickens and comes to a boil. Let it boil while stirring for one minute, then remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the butter until melted and set aside to keep warm.
  3. 3Whisk the remaining half cup of flour, two teaspoons of cinnamon, milk, vanilla, and eggs together in a small bowl until the batter is completely smooth. Preheat a griddle or large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. 4Dip the bread sticks into the egg batter, letting any excess drip back into the bowl. Transfer the coated bread to the hot griddle and cook for about four minutes per side until golden brown. Serve immediately with the warm cider syrup.
