Cranberry Sage Margarita

Tart, herbaceous, and brightly colored, this tequila cocktail balances earthy fresh sage with sweet cranberry puree. Silver tequila, orange liqueur, and agave nectar round out the bold citrus notes for a drink that's both refreshing and complex. It's an impressive option for weekend brunches or festive winter gatherings. A simple sugared rim adds just the right amount of sweetness to finish each sip.

Ingredients

  • 6 oz (170 ml) ice cubes
  • 1½ oz (45 ml) silver tequila (I recommend Herradura Silver)
  • ½ oz (15 ml) orange liqueur
  • ½ oz (15 ml) agave nectar
  • 1½ oz (45 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 6 fresh sage leaves
  • 1 oz (30 ml) cranberry puree, store-bought or freshly made (recipe follows)

Instructions

  1. 1Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Pour in the silver tequila, orange liqueur, agave nectar, freshly squeezed lime juice, six fresh sage leaves, and cranberry puree.
  2. 2Secure a tight-fitting lid onto the shaker. Shake the mixture vigorously 12 to 15 times. This chills the liquid and adds essential dilution to balance the strong spirits.
  3. 3Spread the sugar in an even layer on a small, flat plate. Gently press the rim of a chilled martini glass into the sugar to coat the edges.
  4. 4Strain the chilled margarita into the prepared glass. Garnish with three fresh cranberries and one fresh sage leaf.

Notes

  • Tip: To help the sugar stick perfectly, run a spent lime wedge around the rim of the glass before dipping it into the sugar.
  • Glassware: If you don't have a chilled martini glass, a standard rocks glass filled with fresh ice works beautifully.
