10-Minute Ham, Egg, and Cheese Sandwich

Salty, warm deli ham meets a freshly fried egg and melted American cheese in this diner-style staple. It's the kind of breakfast sandwich that hits the spot whether you're rushing out the door on a Tuesday or taking it easy on a Sunday morning. You'll love how the buttery, crisp toast holds everything together while the rich yolk creates a built-in sauce.

Equipment

  • Skillet

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread, toasted
  • 3 t. butter, softened and divided
  • 1 egg
  • 1 slice American cheese
  • salt to taste
  • 3 to 4 thin slices cooked deli ham

Instructions

  1. 1Spread each slice of toasted bread with one teaspoon of softened butter and set aside. Melt the remaining teaspoon of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. 2Crack the egg directly into the skillet. You can break the yolk with a fork or leave it intact. Cook until the egg is mostly firm, then carefully flip it with a spatula. Sprinkle with salt, place the American cheese slice on top, and transfer the egg to a plate. Cooking on medium-low heat ensures the egg whites set gently without burning the butter.
  3. 3Place the sliced deli ham into the warm skillet and heat it through on both sides. Stack the cooked egg and melted cheese over the warm ham, then place the entire stack between the prepared toast slices.

Notes

  • Swap: Substitute cheddar, Swiss, or pepper jack if you don't have American cheese on hand.
  • Tip: If you prefer a runny yolk, skip flipping the egg and cover the skillet with a lid for a minute to steam the top.
  • Make ahead: You can fry the egg and warm the ham in advance, but assemble the sandwich just before eating so the toast doesn't get soggy.
