Ingredients
1 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips
½ cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup unsweetened baking cocoa
½ cup all-purpose flour*
2 ⅓ cup granulated sugar
2 ⅓ cup packed brown sugar
½ cup white vanilla baking chips
½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts, if desired
2 ⅓ cup butter, melted
3 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
1Layer the semisweet chocolate chips, the first portion of flour, salt, cocoa powder, the second portion of flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, white baking chips, and pecans into a 1-quart glass jar. Pack each layer down firmly.
2Seal the jar tightly until ready to bake or give as a gift.
3When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F and grease an 8-inch or 9-inch square baking pan.
4Empty the jar contents into a large bowl. Add the melted butter, beaten eggs, and vanilla extract. Break up any firm brown sugar with a fork, then stir about 30 times until well blended.
5Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until set.
6Let the brownies cool completely in the pan for about 45 minutes before cutting into 16 squares.
Notes
Gifting: To give this mix as a present, write steps 3 through 6 on a decorative tag and tie it around the jar with a ribbon.
Layering tip: Keep the two flour measurements separate during assembly to create distinct, contrasting layers in the glass jar.
Storage: The assembled dry mix keeps at room temperature for up to 3 months before baking.
