Two ruby grapefruit segments muddle in the shaker until they release their juice, then silver tequila, orange liqueur, agave nectar, and fresh lime juice go in over ice. The grapefruit adds a bitter edge that a standard lime margarita doesn't have — the agave softens it without masking it. Strain into a salt-rimmed glass and add one fresh grapefruit segment as a garnish. Single serving, five minutes.

Ingredients
2 fresh grapefruit segments
6 oz (170 ml) ice cubes
1½ oz (45 ml) silver tequila (I recommend Herradura Silver)
½ oz (15 ml) orange liqueur
1 oz (30 ml) agave nectar
1 oz (30 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice
Salt for rim of glass
1 grapefruit segment
Instructions
1Drop the fresh grapefruit segments into a cocktail shaker and muddle them gently 8 to 10 times until completely crushed.
2Add the ice cubes to the shaker, then pour in the silver tequila, orange liqueur, agave nectar, and freshly squeezed lime juice.
3Secure a tight-fitting lid on the shaker and shake vigorously 12 to 15 times. This chills the drink rapidly and properly dilutes the alcohol.
4Spread the salt in an even layer on a small flat plate and gently press the rim of a chilled martini glass into the salt to coat the edges.
5Strain the shaken cocktail into the prepared glass and garnish with a fresh grapefruit segment.
Notes
Glassware: If you don't have a martini glass, a classic margarita glass or a short rocks glass works perfectly.
Sweetness: Adjust the agave nectar to taste. If your grapefruit is especially sweet, you might need a little less syrup.
Make ahead: You can squeeze the lime and grapefruit juice a few hours in advance, but don't mix the cocktail until you're ready to serve.
