A smoked ham shank goes into the slow cooker with chopped cabbage, onion, cubed potatoes, sliced carrots, a jar of Great Northern beans, and one cup of water. Nine hours on low renders the shank until the meat pulls away from the bone and the beans absorb the smoky cooking liquid. Skim the shank from the pot, pull the meat off the bone, and stir it back in before serving. Six portions come out of one batch — a full dinner that requires minimal prep at the start of the day.
