Spiced Chai

Warm, aromatic, and deeply comforting, this classic spiced chai brings the coffeehouse experience right to your kitchen. A robust blend of black tea, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg creates a rich base that's perfectly balanced by a touch of honey. Frothed milk gives every mug a creamy finish you'll love on a chilly morning. If you're craving something cool, you can even blend the chilled mixture with ice for a refreshing afternoon treat.

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Stovetop

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 4 bags black tea
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. 1Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan. Add the black tea bags and reduce the heat to low. Let the tea simmer for 2 minutes, then remove and discard the tea bags. Don't over-steep, or the black tea will turn bitter.
  2. 2Stir the milk, honey, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg into the brewed tea. Bring the mixture back to a gentle boil. Whisk the liquid vigorously to create a layer of milk foam, then divide the hot chai evenly among four mugs.

Notes

  • Flavor tweak: For a stronger spice profile, let the ground cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg steep in the hot liquid a little longer before whisking the milk.
  • Variation: To serve as a blended smoothie, chill the prepared chai in the refrigerator until completely cold. Blend the chilled mixture with 1 cup of crushed ice on high speed until smooth and frosty.
