Spicy Watermelon Habanero Margarita
Sweet summer watermelon meets a sharp kick of habanero heat in this vibrant tequila cocktail. You'll muddle fresh fruit and fiery pepper together to build a bold, spicy base that wakes up the palate. Orange liqueur and agave nectar step in to smooth out the chili's bite, while a classic salted rim brings a savory contrast to the tart lime juice. It's a refreshing pour that balances sweet, sour, and spicy notes perfectly.
Ingredients
- 3 watermelon cubes, ½” (13 mm) each
- 1 habanero chile ring
- 6 oz (170 ml) ice cubes
- 1½ oz (45 ml) silver tequila (I recommend Herradura Silver)
- ½ oz (15 ml) orange liqueur
- ½ oz (15 ml) agave nectar
- 1½ oz (45 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice
- ¼ oz (7 ml) watermelon syrup
- Salt for rim of glass
- 2 watermelon cubes, ½” (13 mm) each
Instructions
- 1Drop the watermelon cubes and the habanero slice into a cocktail shaker. Press down gently with a muddler 2 to 3 times to release the juices and oils without making the pepper too bitter.
- 2Add the ice cubes to the shaker. Pour in the silver tequila, orange liqueur, agave nectar, fresh lime juice, and watermelon syrup.
- 3Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously 12 to 15 times. Stop when the outside of the shaker feels frosty, which means your drink is perfectly chilled.
- 4Spread the salt in an even layer on a small plate. Press the rim of a chilled glass into the salt to coat the edges. Strain the margarita into the prepared glass and garnish with the remaining 2 watermelon cubes.
Notes
- Spice level: If you prefer a milder drink, remove the seeds from the habanero slice before muddling.
- Glassware: A chilled martini or margarita glass works best to keep the cocktail crisp and cold.
- Swap: If you can't find watermelon syrup, simply muddle an extra cube of fresh watermelon and add a splash more agave nectar.
