Inspired by the famous Boston Cream Pie, this trifle layers cubes of vanilla sponge cake with rich homemade custard, fresh berries, and a glossy chocolate ganache for a show-stopping dessert.

Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • Cake: 1.5 cups flour 1 stick butter, 3/4 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup milk
  • Custard: 1 cup milk 1 cup cream, 3 egg yolks, 2 tbsp cornstarch, 1/3 cup sugar, vanilla
  • Ganache: 3 cups semisweet chocolate 1 cup heavy cream
  • Fruit: 1.25 lb mixed berries blackberries, strawberries, raspberries

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Make custard by tempering yolks with hot milk/cream mixture and cooking until thick. Chill.
  2. Bake a vanilla sponge cake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 25 mins. Cool and slice into squares.
  3. Make ganache by pouring hot cream over chocolate pieces and stirring until smooth.
  4. Layer cake cubes, berries, and chilled custard in a glass bowl. Repeat layers.
  5. Top with the warm ganache and more fresh berries.
