Zuppa Inglese (Italian Trifle)

Layers of liqueur-soaked sponge cake and rich custard. Italy's answer to the English trifle.

Main Ingredients
  • Custard Cream (1 recipe)
  • 10 oz Pound Cake
  • Rum, Cognac, Drambuie, Cherry Heering
  • 2 oz Chocolate
  • Toasted Almonds (optional)

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Slice pound cake. Mix liqueurs.
  2. Layer 1: Custard on bottom.
  3. Layer 2: Cake soaked in liqueur.
  4. Layer 3: Vanilla custard.
  5. Layer 4: Soaked cake.
  6. Melt chocolate into half the remaining custard. Spread as Layer 5.
  7. Layer 6: Soaked cake + remaining vanilla custard.
  8. Top with almonds. Chill 2-3 hours.
